ICRC president flies to Georgia and Russia to assess humanitarian situation
20th August 2008
Chapman Freeborn Airchartering has coordinated urgent flights for the president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Jakob Kellenberger, who travelled to Georgia and Russia to assess the humanitarian impact of the conflict in the region.
A midsize Hawker 800 aircraft was chartered for the multi-leg visit, with Chapman Freeborn’s London office undertaking preparations immediately upon receiving the ICRC’s request.
Tight timescales and the sensitive political situation in the region made obtaining clearances and insurance challenging, but the Chapman Freeborn team worked closely with ICRC’s regional offices in Georgia and Russia to secure special dispensation for the flights.
Mr Kellenberger and four ICRC colleagues first flew from Geneva to the Georgian capital Tbilisi on Sunday 17th August for talks with President Mikheil Saakashvili.

From Tbilisi the group flew on to the North Ossetian city of Vladikavkaz, and then on to Moscow to meet senior officials, including Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
The three-day trip concluded on Tuesday 19th August, and the group returned to Switzerland on the chartered aircraft.
Meanwhile, Chapman Freeborn's UK, Belgium and Netherlands offices have also been involved in transporting relief cargo to the region.
This has included coordination of the movement of over 200 tons of ICRC relief cargo to Tbilisi on seven IL-76 charters from Amman and an AN-12 charter from Geneva.
A further 25 tons of relief cargo was flown to Tbilisi from Orebro on a DC-8 for Sweden-based Raddningsverket, and 16 tons of aid was transported on an AN-12 flight from Brindisi for the UN World Food Programme.
